Pocket Monsters 39 - The Pikachu Forest

Satoshi is aiming to become a Pokémon Master. Takeshi and Kasumi travel together with him. As the trio walk through a forest, they take a break. As they relax and enjoy themselves, Pikachu suddenly notices something staring at them from the thicket. It turns out to be the eyes of a wild Pikachu.

When Pikachu realizes this, it starts chasing the wild Pikachu as it escapes into the forest, doing its best to catch up to it. Satoshi keeps calling after it, but Pikachu doesn't listen, ignoring everything else and continuing into the forest...

Pikachu eventually joins the herd of the wild Pikachu, and while they are a bit uneasy at first, they eventually warm up to it, and Pikachu greatly enjoys being with its kin like this. But then Satoshi decides to join them, and...

NOTE: As previously mentioned in the episode 38 release post, the show got taken off the air for four months due to the Porygon incident December 16th, 1997. It finally returned exactly four months later, on April 16th, 1998, with a one hour special consisting of two episodes. However, while the two episodes meant to be next in line got skipped over due to no longer being seen as seasonally appropriate, the show didn't start back up with what was initially intended to be the 41st episode either: Instead, the first episode in this double episode re-premiere was this entirely new episode, created during the hiatus, which was meant to work as a light introduction to the show and its setting for all the new viewers who would be watching the series for the first time that day. The next episode in line, "The Four Eievui Brothers", then aired as the second episode of this special.

    1. There's a few DVD releases already, the last one was episode 21. Unsure why only some are DVD source though.

    2. According to Dogasu's site, only a few Kanto episodes (like 21) ever got DVD releases: http://dogasu.bulbagarden.net/dvd/region02_best_collection_pm.html

    3. Oh, how strange, you'd think by now such a loved old series would all be on DVD in japan.

    4. I was quite surprised myself when I heard the news. The only place it's all available in Japanese Hulu, but that's only been available for the past 2 years.

Best Pokemon DVD reference. Dogasu is missing tons of DVD's.

PM39 was released on DVD twice.

    6. Not when it comes to the original series it seems, or at least as far as Kanto goes. (I just double-checked.) Still appreciate the link in any case, because it's definitely a much better reference! I'll be sure to use from now on instead. :)

Also works out because I wanted to add something to my previous comment, but there isn't an edit feature. Turns out Japanese Hulu has very little of the original series episodes available now, so I guess it was only for a limited time they had them all. (or they cycle through them, as is common with Hulu)

    7. Yeah, Dogasu isn't missing those DVDs, he just has the ones with one BW episode and one Kanto episode listed separately.

  5. Awesome work yet again team PM, I have been looking forward to more of the classic episodes. Am I correct in assuming that you are about to hit the halfway point? I seem to recall the classic Indigo League series having around 83 episodes, and with the two extra winter themed episodes you previously subbed doesn't that bring you up to 41/83? Congrats if I have got that right, you all do a stellar job :D

    1. The Sekiei/Kanto arc is 82 episodes, so yes, this was the exact halfway point.

  6. Another older series episode so soon? That's a pleasant surprise! The one thing I always liked about this episode was the poignancy of it, and I love how it's even more so subbed. It's also been interesting watching this episode after knowing the story behind it.

Thanks for the releases as always! And congrats! You've not only reached the halfway point of Kanto, but we're finally done with the released out-of-order episodes due to the Porygon episode. (or in this case, made because of it)

    1. XY weekly episodes are the priority. Any extra time we have is spent on older episodes.

    2. That's why I was so surprised to see another one so soon! Guess you guys have had a bit more extra time lately. Still, new or old, I always appreciate everything you guys release!

  7. First thank you for your subs and I am just wondering where do you guys get your over the air streams of XY with closed captions?

  8. So I've just gotten around to watching this, just curious about a line 3 minutes in, "They've formed a mischief out here, huh?", I've never heard of mischief being used to describe a habitat, and google has failed me on trying to find any other definition aside from playful bad behaviour.

Is this a mistake.. perhaps a regional thing I'm not aware of?

    1. "Mischief" is the collective term for a group of mice.

    2. Oh that's neat, not sure why my searching didn't come up with that, thanks for the update. :)
