Sub Process
Unlike most anime released in Japan these days, Pocket Monsters does
not have officially released subs on a service like Crunchyroll. Most
current anime releases from fan groups rip subs from services like Crunchyroll and re-edit these, allowing them to easily rerelease a few hours after they air.
Since this isn't the case with Pocket Monsters, we have to do all the work from scratch, which significantly increases the workload and
therefore takes longer than working off official subs.
Pocket Monsters airs Over-the-Air on TV Tokyo with Japanese Closed Captions. We pretime the closed captions to our work raw making it easier for the translators to fill in the dialogue while having easy access to both caption and audio for any given line at any time. This is a slightly different process than the one most other fansubs groups use, but it makes the process significantly easier for the translator.
Once the initial translation has been completed, the episode gets encoded, and the editor, translation checker and quality checkers review and edit the script, while also looking for things like line timing errors, line style errors, typesetting errors, karaoke errors, grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, encoding glitches, audio in-sync, consistency errors, and any other errors that would reduce the overall quality of the release.

I don't like how people are complaining about how long it takes to sub a episode please be patient people & be grateful thank you PocketMonsters Fansubs for doing what you do.
ReplyDeleteThanks for enlightening us about the subbing procedure... Now i understand why these episodes are so HQ ... You guys are the best ... Thanks again!!!
ReplyDeleteYou guys don't take long at all, really good work!
ReplyDeleteIm very busy at the moment, but next summer I would love to do opinion pieces and character bios for you guys!
ReplyDeleteAny help at any time would be appreciated. Feel free to contact us.
DeleteWill do! Y'all work so hard for us, this would be a great way to give back!
Deleteum u guys should have a progress bar
ReplyDeleteYou can't really assign a number to "how much done" an episode is, nor is it really possible to correctly estimate when a given release will be ready. It wouldn't be possible to come up with a number that would actually mean anything. Episodes are out when they're out.
DeleteIt really is a shame Pocket Monsters is one of those rare series nowadays lacking official subs. I understand something like a physical release might unfortunately be too niche, but even a streaming-only release on a site like Crunchyroll would be better than nothing. Thankfully we have you guys to fill the void though, so I can't complain too much.
ReplyDeleteAnd you guys do such a fantastic job. I love that you guys actually take your time to make sure the releases are the best quality possible, and even use the Japanese Closed Captions in addition to listening to make sure your translations are accurate. (something I think more sub teams could benefit from, actually) It's really appreciated, and I only wish I could do more to support you guys.
Working off closed captions is standard for fansubs. All groups do this if the show actually airs with them, it's not something unique to us.
DeleteOh I know, I was actually referring to a handful of groups I'm familiar with that had to go off of ear. (due to either airings without or not having access to them in one case) I should've specified better.
DeleteYou guys are awesome! So awesome that I refuse to watch Pokemon Origin's, until you have subbed it.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to the Origin 2.
The group that subbed it did a decent job and hence why we've put that series on the back burner.
DeleteYou're doing an awesome job. Keep up the good work. Only 40 more episodes left of the Indigo League left to sub. Then we'll get Orange Islands, yey! I can't help subbing and I get ill a lot so I can't help with updates on the site either. However, I could donate some money to the project, when I have money. When is the next time you need donations?
