Pocket Monsters 038 - Cyber Soldier Porygon

Cyber Soldier Porygon was originally intended to be the 38th episode of the Pocket Monsters TV series. However, when it aired in Japan December 16, 1997, certain in-episode scenes featuring rapidly flashing red and blue light caused multiple young viewers to suffer from seizures and the show was put on a temporary hold while this matter was being investigated. After the cause for the seizures had been discovered, the show was eventually put back on air, but this episode was permanently struck from official canon, and to date is not considered to exist by those involved with the show. Due to the aforementioned, we advise viewers to excise caution when watching this release.

Various notes on the episode and cultural aspects related to it can be found at: http://www.pocketmonsters.net/episodes/viewep/38/Notes

Also note: When the series returned on air April 16th, 1997, it re-premiered with a 1 hour special consisting of the episode "The Four Eievui Brothers ", which was originally intended to be episode 41, and "The Pikachu Forest", a previously unannounced episode. The episodes originally intended to air as episode 39 and 40, "Rougela's Christmas" and "An Iwark Bivouac" were temporarily skipped over, as they were Christmas/winter-themed episodes no longer considered seasonally appropriate. These episodes were eventually aired as episode 65 and 66. Two later episodes were also aired out of order due to them no longer being thematically fit for their shifted airdate. We will be subbing and releasing these affected episodes in the order they were originally intended to air in.

The one-hour special from April 16th also included an introduction by TV host Miyuki Yadama, who gave a quick summary of the situation and offered some cautionary advice. A subtitled version of this introduction is included at the end of this release.

  2. Is it safe to Watch the show as whole, or should I Close the Eyes when the flashing scene occurs? I Heard it was just a few seconds it occurred. even 4Kids edited that scene to be more safe, but it wasn´t aired because of it´s ban.

    1. 4Kids never touched this episode. It was permabanned worldwide for good after what happened during its one and only airing.

As for the flashing scenes... there's multiple of them, and some of them last for some 5-6 seconds. It's unlikely watching the episode is going to give you an actual seizure, but I wouldn't exactly recommend watching it in a dark room with your nose touching your monitor either. These scenes are pretty intense, and the fact that they actually harmed people should be respected.

Remember, "While watching anime, make sure not to sit too close to the screen and that the room is well lit."

  3. Upcoming Pocket Monsters 65? Is that a mistake or have you guys got suddenly a ton of the original series waiting to be uploaded? If so then damn, kudos.

Looking forward to when you finish The Origin tho, everyone seems to think it's pretty good. :)

    1. As mentioned in the main post, what eventually ended up airing as episode 65 was really meant to be the 39th episode. It's also the one you see a preview for at the end of this episode. We'll be releasing these various out-of-order Kanto episodes in the order they were really meant to air/be seen in rather than the messed-up order they actually aired in due to the Porygon incident mucking with the schedule.

    3. Could you pls use the right chronological order in the episode titles as well so we won't get confused? E. g. name the Jynx episode "[PM]Pocket_Monsters_-_039_-_[...]" instead of 65? Thank you a lot for the long awaited 38th episode^^ I have another sub of it on my computer but I prefer your translations since they are more faithful to the original imo.

Off-topic: I'm searching for raws of the first "Pikachu's Winter Vacation" but I can't find any. Since you subbed this OVA I wanted to ask you if you know where I could download it without subs so I can sub it in my first language. That would be really great!

    4. We'll probably label it something like "[PM]Pocket_Monsters_-_065_(38.2)_-_[...]". The original airing numbering for these episodes is used absolutely everywhere, so renumbering almost 30 episodes to follow a number system that has never been used anywhere ever is just going to confuse everyone. The file names will be labeled with some sort of informative note and the affected episodes themselves will have some sort of note similar to the one in BW026 explaining what's up with the order.

    5. Also, yeah, this release is in essence a severely touched up rerelease of our old [Excal] release, with numerous corrections, translation fixes and other touchups, and the subtitles are infinitely more accurate than they were in that ancient release.

    6. Ah I see, well cool then. Also had no idea you guys used to be Excal. ^^

Did you have to mention BW's missing eps tho? I'm still sour about how good the TR vs TP trailer looked... they even said they were going to get released later on and never did, not in the original form anyway. :/

I'd be happy if they just released them on dvd as 'missing episodes'.

  4. Damn you guys rule!! I have said it before but I will say it again!!
Not only are you doing the original series, not only have you done the banned episodes, but you are going to sub them in the correct original order too!! Wow, just wow!! Keep up the great work, love it!!

  5. Thanks, your subs are amazing! Any Chance you guys can do the other banned episode (The Ice Cave).

  6. Oh hey, this is the first Kanto episode Yamato-san hasn't translated isn't it? Is there a reason he didn't do it? (and will he be coming back later or...) You guys still did a wonderful job though so I don't care either way, especially if the 3 people who did it instead will be able to get older episodes out quicker than usual~

    1. As mentioned above, this episode is a severely touched up version of the sub we released as Excalibur Fansubs all those years ago. The original Excal release was translated by NnT042, and Adamant and Sushi retranslated sizable parts of it, hence the crediting of three translators.

Yamato-san will be back for the next Kanto releases.

    2. Derp that should've dawned on me. But it is nice to know since I do like consistency with a translator when it can be had. Anyways thanks again for the much-needed updated release and looking forward to future episodes of both old and new releases! (hopefully at least one of the Christmas episodes can be done in time for the holidays!)

  7. Since you guys are doing the old episodes as well; can you please do the REAL version Pokemon 018: "Holiday at Acopaulo"? Please.
And thank you guys for all your great work.

    1. Real version? We subbed episode 18 in its entirety years ago, it's on the tracker.

    2. Well....I feel kinda dumb. It never occured to me there was a torrent tracker. Well thanks for enlightening me, and so sorry for my ignorance.

  8. You guys deserve so much love for finishing Season 01 with jap audio / eng subs.

This very first season is by far the richest, deepest and has a phenomenal soundtrack, it deserves kudos, as do you.

If I can help you guys with anything regarding Photoshop jobs, just let me know. I'd love to contribute.
